The hardest part is the first sentence

Silence Between Sirens graphic: The hardest part is often the first sentence

The hardest part is often the first sentence.

Not the crisis. The ordinary moment before it, where someone could say “I’m not doing great” and does not - because in a lot of services, you do not. You get on with it. Saying otherwise can feel like admitting you cannot cope, and that carries a cost people have watched others pay.

So the silence holds. Not because no one cares, but because speaking feels riskier than staying quiet.

Changing that is not about grand gestures. It is about making the small conversations normal. A colleague asking how you actually are, and meaning it. A supervisor who has said, out loud, that struggling is not weakness. Enough people speaking that speaking stops being remarkable.

This is what Community means to us. Not a campaign. The everyday business of making it safe to say the true thing, so that “I’m fine” stops being the only acceptable answer.

You do not have to be at breaking point to speak. And the more of us who say so, the truer it becomes.

You do not have to be at breaking point to reach out.

Silence Between Sirens is not a crisis service. These lines are free and there for you now.
